Removal of wrinkles

Fillers can be used for filling wrinkles, nasolabial folds, corners of the mouth, and for modelling and the enlargement of lips, scar correction, and corrections of inequality and asymmetry of the face. There are many filling products on the market. Before applying the filler it is important to consult a doctor who is going to decide, which type of filler is the best for you.

The most commonly used material is hyaluronic acid-based gel. It is a natural component of the body (component of the extracellular matrix), which is hypoallergenic, binds water in the skin and induces collagen production, which leads to filling wrinkles and firming the location. The procedure is associated with minimum pain. The treatment of most locations is performed under local anaesthesia - either using the EMLA aesthetic cream, or using injections (e.g. in lip augmentations). The preparation Juvederm Ultra already contains an anaesthetic and previous anaesthesia is not necessary. The gel is injected into the skin through a thin needle. After the procedure, the treated areas may show redness and mild swelling, which disappear within 1-2 days.

Botulinum toxin

Botulinum toxin (type A) is used for wrinkle correction since the 1990's. Due to the simplicity and effectiveness of this treatment, it is becoming increasingly popular not only in women, but also in men. It is one of the substances that are produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Botulinum toxin acts on nerve-muscle connection. After the application, the nerve impulses are not transmitted to the muscles and hence the activity of mimic muscles is reduced and, subsequently, smoothing of wrinkles occurs.

The procedure is very quick and almost painless. A small dose of botulinum toxin is injected into areas where the activity of facial muscles causes the formation of wrinkles. Most frequently treated wrinkles are: wrinkles located over the bridge of the nose (which is called glabella), furthermore, forehead wrinkles and wrinkles in outer eye corners, but also wrinkles on the upper lip or neck. The application temporarily interrupts neuromuscular transmission of impulses and leads to the desirable muscle relaxation and smoothing of wrinkles. In addition, it prevents the further deepening of wrinkles.

Effect and duration

The effect starts within 3-14 days and lasts usually for 3-5 months.

The effect of botulinum toxin is not permanent – it subsides slowly. It can be said that on average during 3-4 months the normal function of mimic muscles is restored. The treatment duration is related to the dose applied. With each application of botulinum toxin, the effect prolongs and it may last for up to approximately 8 months.

In very deep wrinkles, it is usually necessary to combine the botulinum toxin e.g. with a filler. It is very useful to use also other methods of general skin care and rejuvenation (IPL, chemical peeling, etc.).
